Did you ever want to be a pirate, sail the Seven Seas on a pirate ship and bury the treasure? Being a pirate is all fun and adventure, or is it? What was being a pirate really like? Scurvy, hard work, tyrannical captains?
This pathfinder is designed for middle school students to explore the world of REAL pirates, not Disney's version. Pirates were explorers of the seas just as Amerigo Vespucci and Marco Polo. They engaged in trade and warfare; many pirates got their start as profiteers - they were paid by governments to attack trade ships of enemy countries. The next time you study explorers, consider a pirate, buccaneer or privateer.

As you fondly remember Lego pirates and Disney's Treasure planet, and await the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie, dive into this pathfinder. There are books and online resources, audio and visual resources and a few hands on activities.
